The Miller and Vantage
North Sydney, NSW
Set in the heart of thriving North Sydney, The Miller is a 21 storey mixed use development comprising 169 private residences and 100 serviced apartments.
The building site was extremely tight – just 24m wide and 50m long – with existing buildings either side and limited access. We needed to come up with a materials handling solution that would optimise the efficiency of the site with minimal impact on adjacent businesses and residents.
Our strategy for the tower crane incorporated an internal climb as there was no space to position a crane off site. We used one of our Yongmao STL230s with a 50m boom, together with a Favco internal climbing system. We needed to modify the configuration to connect the climber to the crane and our workshop team collaborated with the respective crane manufacturers to fabricate a transition piece. The crane climbed up to level 21, jumping up around 3 floors at a time for a total of six jumps.
Once the crane reached the top, we slid it out of the lift shaft onto structural steel beams so that the lifts could be completed. The tower crane completed the project from its position on the roof, and was then dismantled with a 500t mobile crane, pulling it down in a record six hours.
The adjacent Vantage project, which commenced after our cranes had finished at The Miller, was also for Richard Crookes and had similarly tight access. The building footprint was 20x20m and we used a similar approach with a Jarlway tower crane internally climbed with a Favco internal climber.
The Miller and Vantage shared common access with adjacent residential buildings, which was also required for materials handling. Reds worked closely with our client to help plan the best way to manage access for all parties with the least possible disruption to residents.
